TDM is the company responsible for the provision of public radio and television broadcasting in open signal in the Macao Special Administrative Region. The company was founded on January 1, 1982 under the name of the Society of Television and Broadcasting of Macao was a Portuguese state-owned enterprise with independent management. However, in August 1988 after he had transferred 49.5% of its shares to a private group, became a public company of mixed economy and call themselves Broadcasting of Macao. TDM is privately-owned as of September 2010.
TDM is the only company responsible for the provision of public radio and television, creating channels in Chinese and Portuguese TV and radio signal open in Macao. But most Macao residents also receive broadcasts from other sources, including both TVB and ATV in Hong Kong, which is accessible in most parts of Macao. The ratings for TDM would suffer as a result. In 2007, these subsidies amounted to nearly 73 million Patacas, while the revenue was valued at about 36 million Patacas. The cost of the company is large, so TDM presented in 2007 only one positive result of 45 thousand Patacas. In late 2007, the company had 371 employees.
After the transition of Macau to China (1999), the vast majority of its communications vehicles are produced in Cantonese and Mandarin. Currently, TDM operates "TV Macau" (founded in May 1984) and "Radio Macau" (founded 1930).
In one of the channels, TDM displays programs in Portuguese coming from the retransmission of RTP Internacional, plus some local news that typically last about 15 minutes. On Sunday mornings, the Catholic mass is broadcasted live at the Igreja da Sé. TDM also maintains a radio channel in Portuguese, "Radio Macau" with a broadcast of its own production from 7h to 20h. Since that time, Radio broadcasts in the programming of chain-RDP Antena 1. Radio Macau sends twelve o'clock local news, in addition to music programs and information throughout the 13 hours of issuance itself.
In 2008, it was confirmed that the TDM will broadcast live the Olympic Games in Beijing and will focus more on the production itself.
Local programmes on the Portuguese service of Rádio Macau begins from 07:00 to 20:00 on weekdays, and from 08:00 to 20:00 at weekends. Programmes from RDP Antena 1 are relayed for the rest of the time.
The Cantonese and Mandarin service of Rádio Macau is also 24-hours, with total local programme outputs.
Local programmes on Canal Macau broadcast from around 19:00 on weekdays until 01:00, and longer hours at weekends. Programmes from Portugal's RTP Internacional are usually relayed for other times, except for football matches. The Catholic Mass is broadcast live on Sunday mornings at the Igreja da Sé. These make Canal Macau a 24-hour television service.
Transmissions of Macau TV Station are divided into three major blocks. Breakfast news is broadcast from 07:15 to 09:00 on Mondays to Saturdays; afternoon and prime time programmes from around 12:30 until about 01:30. Transmissions may begin earlier on Sundays, and are longer for live coverage of matches such as the English FA Premier League or the Italian Football Championship. At other times when programmes are not transmitted, continuous financial information from Reuters will be displayed, with the broadcast of Rádio Macau on 100.7 MHz FM as the background sound.
As of September 2010, Macau TV broadcasts local news under the TDM News branding in Cantonese, Mandarin, and English. TDM also broadcasts news in Portuguese on Canal Macau.
